How much is my gold necklace or chain worth?

The value of your gold necklace or chain depends on its weight, gold purity and the current gold buying rate. Use our gold price calculator for an indicative estimate before sending your items. We assess their weight and purity to confirm your final offer.

We also buy broken gold chains and necklaces with damaged clasps. Stones and other non-gold components do not count towards the gold weight used for your valuation. You do not need to repair your necklace before sending it for assessment.

A recent broken gold necklace valuation

On 14 October 2026, Moonstone Gold paid £900.93 for a broken 9ct gold necklace with an assessed gold weight of 24.5g. That is equivalent to approximately £36.77 per gram.

This completed purchase shows that a broken necklace can still have value based on its gold content. It is a past transaction, not today’s quote. Your offer will depend on the assessed weight and purity of your necklace and the gold buying rate at the time.

Ready to sell your gold necklaces? Enter your details below and tell us about the items you would like to send. We’ll arrange your free insured selling pack. You decide whether to sell after receiving our offer.

You may list items for sale here if you have the details ready by clicking "Add Item," but it's not required.

How and when will I get paid?

We aim to contact you with an offer within 24 hours of receiving your gold necklaces. Our assessment uses gold-testing equipment to establish their gold content alongside their weight.

If you accept the offer, we arrange prompt payment by bank transfer. Payment follows your acceptance of the confirmed valuation.

If you decline, we return your items free of charge. You can review the offer before deciding whether to sell.

Why choose Moonstone Gold?

Our service includes a free insured selling pack, an assessment of your items and a clear offer. There are no hidden fees or commissions deducted from the offer you accept, and we return your items free of charge if you decline.

You can sell gold necklaces alongside other unwanted gold jewellery in the same pack. Include details of each item when completing the form so our team knows what you plan to send.

Which gold necklaces can I sell?

You can send unwanted gold necklaces, fine chains, heavier chains and necklaces with pendants for assessment. A missing clasp, tangled links or a broken chain does not automatically make an item worthless. The assessment focuses on the gold present, so a necklace does not need to be wearable to have a gold value.

If you have several necklaces, list them separately on the form where possible. Include any purity markings you can see and mention whether each necklace has a pendant or other attachments. You can also tell us if you are unsure about an item rather than guessing its carat.

Understanding hallmarks and purity

A small mark on the clasp or a nearby tag may help identify the gold purity. For example, 375 indicates 9ct gold, 585 indicates 14ct gold and 750 indicates 18ct gold. A necklace and its pendant may have different markings, so check each component separately if the marks are visible.

Hallmarks are useful clues, but they do not replace an assessment. Clasps may have been replaced, markings can be worn, and some items contain a mixture of materials. If you cannot find a clear mark, contact our team for guidance. You can also read our guide to gold hallmarks to understand common markings before completing the form.

Why your home estimate may differ from the offer

When you sell gold necklaces, the weight shown on household scales is a starting point rather than a confirmed gold weight. A pendant may contain a stone, and a clasp may include non-gold parts. These components can add to the total weight without adding the same amount of gold value.

The calculator also uses the purity you select. If testing identifies a different purity, or the buying rate changes before your valuation, the final offer can differ from your initial estimate. Check the confirmed offer before deciding whether to proceed, and ask our team if you would like any part of the assessment explained.

Preparing your necklaces for posting

Make a simple list of the necklaces and other items you plan to send. Taking a photograph for your own records can help you remember what is in the pack. There is no need to repair broken links or attempt chemical cleaning before an assessment. Follow the packing instructions supplied with your selling pack.

Keep your postal receipt and tracking details until the transaction is complete. If you think your items may exceed the stated insurance cover, speak to us before sending them. For an antique, designer or collectable necklace, you may also wish to obtain a specialist jewellery valuation to compare its resale value with an offer based on gold content.

Have a question before sending your necklace?

If you have questions about a necklace, the postal service or your valuation, contact our team before sending your items. When you’re ready, request your free selling pack using the form above.
