Sell Gold Rings in Different Styles and Condition
You can sell gold rings in different styles and conditions, including plain bands, signet rings and damaged jewellery. For example, a ring with a bent band can still contain recoverable gold, even if you can no longer wear it.
- Gold wedding bands and unwanted engagement rings.
- Yellow, white and rose gold rings.
- Broken, scratched or misshapen rings.
- Signet rings and other personal jewellery.
- Items with worn or unclear purity marks that need testing.
However, colour alone does not identify the metal. White gold and platinum are different materials, and a platinum or palladium ring is not automatically gold-bearing. If you are unsure what you have, ask our team about your item before posting it.
How Much Are Your Gold Rings Worth?
When you sell gold rings, the metal valuation depends on their assessed purity, eligible gold alloy weight and the buying rate applied. Therefore, two rings that look similar can receive different offers.
For an initial indication, use our gold price calculator. Enter the weight in grams and the correct carat if you know it. However, an online estimate cannot confirm the composition of your ring or the weight of any stones.
Estimated metal value = eligible gold alloy weight × the quoted rate for that carat. For example, a hypothetical rate of £40 per gram would give £200 for a plain 5g ring of the matching purity. This illustrates the calculation only; it is not today’s price or a guaranteed payment.
Understanding Hallmarks and Gold Purity
First, look inside the band for any marks. Common gold fineness marks include 375 for 9ct, 585 for 14ct, 750 for 18ct and 916 for 22ct. These describe different proportions of gold in the alloy.
However, a number stamped inside a ring is not, by itself, a complete UK hallmark. You can learn about recognised marks in the UK government’s hallmarking guidance. If a mark is missing or difficult to read, testing can help establish the material.
Also, keep different carats separate when estimating their value. A rate quoted specifically for 18ct already accounts for that purity, so you should not apply the gold percentage a second time. Our gold testing service explains more about assessment.
Can You Sell Gold Rings with Diamonds or Other Stones?
A stone-set ring needs careful assessment because its total weight includes more than gold alloy. Therefore, the weight shown on your scales may differ from the weight used for the gold valuation.
Before you send a diamond or gemstone ring, ask how the stones will be handled and whether the offer will include any value for them. Do not assume that a gold calculator includes a diamond valuation. Similarly, avoid removing stones yourself simply to weigh the band.
If your ring has a significant gemstone, designer name or antique interest, consider a specialist jewellery valuation as well. This can help you compare its value as a complete piece with an offer based on recoverable metal.
Preparing to Sell Gold Rings by Post
Before you sell gold rings by post, make a short inventory and photograph the items. Then, follow the packing instructions supplied with your pack and keep the tracking details until the transaction is complete.
Our postal cover is available up to £2,500, with the appropriate cover arranged for the items you send. If you believe your rings are worth more than this, contact us before posting. Also, mention any other jewellery you plan to include so the total parcel value is considered.
Payment and Returning Your Items
Once you receive your offer, check that you understand the valuation before accepting. For example, you can ask which weight, purity and rate were used. This helps you compare the final payment with any earlier estimate.
If you accept, we pay you immediately by bank transfer. If you decline, we return your items free of charge. You are under no obligation to sell gold rings simply because you requested a pack or received an offer.
Deciding Whether to Sell
A ring can have personal meaning alongside its metal value. Therefore, take time to decide which pieces you are comfortable parting with. You can set sentimental items aside and request an assessment of the others.
When you are ready to sell gold rings for cash, use the form above to start the process. Alternatively, contact Moonstone Gold for help with an item, the postal arrangements or your valuation.
Frequently Asked Questions
We assess gold wedding bands, engagement rings, signet rings and broken jewellery. Yellow, white and rose gold items can all be assessed. If you are unsure about the metal, contact us before posting.
Yes. A missing or worn hallmark does not necessarily mean the ring contains no gold. We assess its composition before making an offer.
Contact us before sending a stone-set ring to confirm how its gemstones will be handled and whether they will contribute to the offer. The gold calculator does not include a separate gemstone valuation.
Broken or misshapen rings can still have recoverable gold value. However, antique or designer jewellery may also have value as a complete piece, so consider a specialist valuation before selling it for its metal content.
