Will lab-grown gold make gold prices fall? The recent mercury-to-gold announcement does not establish that cheap gold is about to reach the market. Gold prices can fall for other reasons, but a laboratory claim alone is not enough to predict a drop in the next few weeks or months.

This guide looks specifically at synthetic gold and the evidence behind the headlines. For the wider market and selling considerations, see our gold price outlook and predictions guide.

Evidence reviewed: 28 October 2026. The featured image is an AI-generated conceptual illustration, not a photograph of gold produced in an experiment.

What has Marathon Fusion actually announced?

Marathon Fusion reportedly announced on 21 October 2026 that it had converted mercury into stable gold during an experiment the previous month. Its claim attracted attention because it suggested progress beyond a proposed production method.

However, Euronews’ report of 23 October 2026 states that the result had not been independently verified and that the available information did not establish the quantity produced or its cost. Those missing details matter when assessing any claim about future gold supply.

Readers should therefore distinguish a company announcement from independently checked experimental results. Neither, on its own, demonstrates that a factory can supply affordable gold consistently.

Can scientists really make gold in a laboratory?

Yes. Gold is a chemical element, and nuclear reactions can change another element into gold by altering its nucleus. This process is called nuclear transmutation. Simply mixing chemicals or melting ordinary metals cannot achieve the same result.

CERN’s May 2025 explanation of lead-to-gold conversion describes how removing three protons from a lead nucleus produces a gold nucleus. CERN estimated that its four major experiments created about 29 picograms of gold during the Large Hadron Collider’s 2015–2018 run. That is 29 trillionths of a gram.

Those fast-moving gold nuclei then struck accelerator equipment and broke apart. The finding was a physics achievement, not the production of a gold bar that could be sold. It also shows why the recent claim should not be described as the first time anyone has ever made gold.

How is mercury supposed to become stable gold?

Marathon Fusion’s explanation of its proposed process describes exposing mercury-198 to high-energy neutrons. The reaction produces mercury-197, which is unstable and decays into stable gold-197. The company proposes using this process alongside fusion energy production.

The researchers’ 2025 research preprint on gold production using fusion neutrons models an output of roughly two tonnes of gold per year per gigawatt of thermal fusion power. Crucially, that figure comes from simulations. It is not a report that the company has already manufactured two tonnes of gold.

The distinction between thermal power and electricity output also matters when comparing headlines. Neither a large projected output nor the use of the word “scalable” tells readers when a commercial plant will operate.

Will lab-grown gold make gold prices fall soon?

Our assessment is that the evidence reviewed does not justify predicting a near-term gold-price fall caused by synthetic supply. That is a judgement about what this announcement supports, rather than a guarantee that gold prices will stay level or rise.

To make a stronger case for a supply-driven price effect, we would look for evidence at each of these stages:

  1. Verification: published measurements and independent checks of what was produced.
  2. Recovery: a measured quantity of usable gold recovered from the process, rather than a production-rate headline alone.
  3. Economics: credible costs covering equipment, energy, feedstock, processing and any necessary storage.
  4. Scale: repeatable output and an achievable timetable for operating plants.
  5. Market supply: meaningful quantities actually becoming available to buyers.

These are different milestones. A successful small experiment would answer an important scientific question while leaving the commercial questions open. Equally, a proposed plant’s annual output should not be treated as gold already entering circulation.

If economical production eventually added substantial supply, it could put downward pressure on prices, all else being equal. The effect would still depend on demand and how quickly that supply arrived. There is no defensible percentage drop or date to attach to this announcement alone.

What else could make gold prices fall in the near future?

The World Gold Council’s framework for gold-price drivers covers economic activity, risk and uncertainty, opportunity costs such as interest rates and currencies, and momentum. These provide a broader way to assess price changes than a single technology headline.

For example, higher real interest rates can make interest-paying assets more attractive relative to gold. A stronger US dollar, changes in investment flows or reduced demand for safe-haven assets can also put pressure on prices. These relationships are not automatic, and different forces can offset one another.

For UK readers, the pound matters too. As a currency-conversion example, if the dollar gold price stayed unchanged while sterling strengthened against the dollar, the equivalent price in pounds would fall. That would not require any newly manufactured gold.

What does the news mean for someone selling jewellery?

A headline about synthetic gold is not a sound reason, by itself, to rush a sale. Separate the decision about an item you no longer want from an attempt to predict the market’s next move. Consider its sentimental value and whether it may have value as complete jewellery before accepting a gold-content offer.

For an indicative estimate, use our gold value calculator with the item’s weight and purity. The final purchase offer follows inspection; a calculator result or market price is not a guaranteed payout.

If you decide to sell, our guide to the postal gold-selling process explains the next steps. There is no need to treat an unverified supply claim as a deadline.

Questions about synthetic gold and falling prices

Is lab-made gold fake gold?

Gold created through nuclear transmutation is gold. The important distinction is between creating gold nuclei and recovering stable, usable metal in an economical process. A gold-coloured coating or imitation is a different product.

Does the announcement mean gold prices will crash?

No such conclusion follows from the evidence reviewed. A price-crash claim would need much more support than an experiment announcement, including credible information about costs, supply and demand.

Is a projected annual output the same as gold already produced?

No. The annual output in the cited research is a simulation-based projection for a proposed fusion system. It should not be quoted as the result of the reported laboratory experiment.

Where should I check for updates?

Look for experimental publications, independent verification and measured production figures alongside company announcements. The source links above let you distinguish the established CERN result, Marathon’s proposed method and reporting on the newer claim.
